Indian-origin leader of Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) party of Nepal, Madhav Kumar Nepal is expected to become the new prime minister of the country. In order to end the political deadlock in the country, the Nepalese president Ram Bran Yadav on Sunday (May 10) asked the parliament to choose a prime minister. Following president's call, Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) has decided to form a coalition government.

During the central committee meeting of UML party, most of the members proposed the name of the 56-year-old Madhav Kumar Nepal for the post of prime minister. According to senior party member, there is hardly any dispute over the nomination of Madhav Kumar Nepal. The UML, which is the third largest party in the Constituent Assembly, urged major political parties like Unified CPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress, Madhesi Peoples Rights Forum and Terai Madhes Democratic Party and others to help form a coalition government.

The political deadlock appeared in Nepal when Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda  resigned as the prime minister following a row over sacking of the army chief, Rukmangad Katawal. Madhav Kumar Nepal, whose ancestors came from India, has been an undisputed leader of the communist party for 15 years. The veteran leader suffered a setback in the April constituent assembly elections when he lost from both his constituencies.
