On Wednesday, Britain's highest court, The House of Lords ruled in favor of thousands of Indian Doctors. It said that the government dictation to make the exhibitive changes to their work status in Britain was improper. This decision follows a move by the British Department of Health which earlier upset an Appeals Court decision back in October 2007, which had also ruled in favor of the Indian doctors.

The department had issued a formal direction to the state-owned National Health Service, which is Britain's largest health sector employer. It said that the doctors who came under the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) visa should be trained only if there are no British or European candidates for the same.

The Department of Health, after losing their case in the Appeals court, had filed their case in the House of Lords. But, on Wednesday the ruling of the House of Lords pleased the Indian nominees immensely. BAPIO President Ramesh Mehta said that the House of Lords has justified the position and the government had acted in a very hurried way without thinking about the consequences for thousands of medical graduates. Their case was fought by Rabinder Singh, who is a high-profile NRI human rights lawyer.
