India will unveil the cheapest laptop costing only Rs 500 on February 3 in Tirupati during the launch of the National Mission on Education. The low-cost laptop has been developed by the students of Vellore Institute of Technology, scientists at Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, IIT Madras and Semiconductor Complex, a public sector undertaking. The government of India has planned to provide this type of laptops to the students of school and colleges across the country.
 
The low-cost laptop comes with features like 2 GB memory, WiFi, fixed Ethernet and expandable memory. It is claimed that the Rs-500 laptop will consume just 2 watts of power. The laptop will be displayed at the launch of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology. The launch of education mission was earlier approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. The central government-sponsored mission aims to help the students to acquire knowledge easily and convincingly through Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
 
The National Mission on Education will provide high quality personalized and interactive knowledge modules over the internet/intranet for all the learners in Higher Education Institutions. Minister of Human Resource Development Arjun Singh will inaugurate the mission on February 3. The government stated that an amount of Rs.4612 crore will be incurred during the 11th Five Year Plan for the National Mission on Education through ICT.
