Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday during his two day official visit to Bhutan announced the institution of the Nehru-Wangchuk Scholarship. The scholarship principally aims at encouraging Bhutanese students to study in Indian Universities and colleges. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is the first world leader to visit neighboring Bhutan after it marked itself in the group of democratic nations in March this year.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made the announcement while addressing the joint session of the newly elected Parliament of Bhutan. Mr. Singh said at the joint Parliament session that India will constitute the scholarship for all Bhutanese students who are willing to study in India.
The visit by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh holds immense significance for the world’s largest and youngest democracy celebrate 50th anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s visit to the Himalayan kingdom and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Wangchuk dynasty in Bhutan. In his address Mr. Singh expressed India’s readiness to help the Himalayan kingdom with every possible infrastructural, political and economic assistance to make the state prosper and secure.
