Indian naval force is expected to get Krivak IV-class guided missile warships from Russia. According to reports, both India and Russia are negotiating the delivery contract of the additional warships. The Krivak IV-class guided missile warships are being developed by Russia at the Yantar shipyard in its Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad. India had signed a $1.6 billion contract with Russia in July 2006 for the supply of missile guided warships.

Last October, India military delegation led by deputy chief of the naval staff, Vice Admiral Raman P. Suthan made an inspection trip to the Yantar shipyard. After the visit, the Indian delegation expressed its satisfaction over the pace and the quality of the construction. According to Rosoboron export's general director Anatoly Isaikin, there has been some disruption in the construction work and it is very hard to meet the deadlines.

He further informed that the delay in construction is incurred mainly because of the weaponry and electronics installation on the warships. Earlier Russia played a crucial role in building three Krivak-class frigates viz. INS Talwar, INS Trishul and INS Tabar for India. The consignment of warships was delivered to India in late 2004.

The proposed Krivak-class frigate weighs about 4,000 metric tonnes and has a speed of 30 knots. The warship is designed to accomplish wide range of maritime missions, primarily hunting down and destroying large surface ships and submarines. According to Anatoly Isaikin, Krivak IV-class warship will out -number any other variant of frigate.
