India early on Wednesday, May 07, 2008 successfully test fired Agni III, the country’s most sophisticated intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM). The 3500 km range surface to surface nuclear capable Agni III missile was tested from the Wheelers’ Island at Orissa coast. According to defense sources, Agni III was tested from a mobile launcher from the launch complex (LC-4) of the integrated test range (ITR) at about 9:56 am.
Defense sources have revealed that the test result will be known after detailed analysis of the flight data recovered. Agni III is described as India's most powerful missiles developed indigenously by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). The 16 meter long and 1.8 meter wide missile has the capability of carrying a payload of 1000 kg. Agni III missile is fitted with on-board computer for its guidance system. The intermediate range ballistic missile will tremendously bolster India’s second strike capability as it can be launched from anywhere in India using a mobile launcher.
