Serbia has managed to garner the support of India on the issue of Kosovo's independence that will be raised in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) next month. Vuk Jeremic, the visiting Serbian foreign minister, told the media recently that India has pledged to vote in Serbia's favor at UNGA when it will request to refer the issue of Kosovo's 'illegal' independence to the International Court of Justice.

In February, Kosovo has announced its independence from Serbia. However, it is only 47 nations, including the United States, from the total 192 member-United Nations that have approved of Kosovo's dissection. Russia, China and India, on the other hand, have rejected this move. Earlier the United Nations had approved Serbia's request, but what will happen finally is subject to a vote by all UN nations in UNGA.

Jeremic, the first Serbian foreign minister to visit India, said, 'India like other nations has a single vote but this single vote carries a lot of weight. I met foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee and our position on the issue has been received here with deep understanding. Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence is an ethnically motivated attempt to secede in defiance of international law.'
