Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet said that Indian should become a permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC). Michelle Bachelet, who is Chile’s first woman President, said that there is a need for a more transparent Security Council and with a larger participation. These statements were made by Bachelet after a number of agreements and treaties were signed with visiting Indian President Pratibha Patil recently. Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet underscored that she had made the stance on India’s inclusion in the UNSC as permanent member clear before President Pratibha Patil.
The pacts Chile and India have inked comprise cooperation on areas ranging from science and technology to sports, air transportation and Antarctic research. The President of India pointed out that the accord should result in closer ties between the two countries in different fields, including trade, which touchedUS$2.4 billion (euro1.5 billion) in 2007. Pratibha Patil was escorted by a number of Indian business representatives on her visit to Chile. Chile, however, also supports Brazil's bid for a permanent post in the UN Security Council.
