Union Minister of State For External Affairs, Shashi Tharoor cited that the proposed joint commission between India and the Republic of Benin will lay a strong foundation for the bilateral ties between the two nations across sectors.

Tharoor is in Cotonou on a three-day itinerary for holding talks with the President of Benin, Boni Yayi. The discussion will be focussed on a range of issues including bilateral trade.

The discussions will be held only after Tharoor watches the presentation of the draft agenda on the joint commission between the two nations.

"I look forward to receiving His Excellency's valuable guidance on promotion of bilateral relations as well as his assessment of the major regional and international issues," Tharoor, who is on a maiden visit to the country, said.

Tharoor was received by Benois foreign minister Jean Marie Ehouzou.

"We in India greatly admire Republic of Benin as a shining example of a tolerant, progressive multi-ethnic and multi-religious society with a multi-party democracy," Tharoor said, citing that India, which owns world's largest democracy, is happy with the achievements of Benin and wants to be a part of its further successes.

Five deals have been inked by India and Benin in March on issues related to small-scale industries, cultural and scientific cooperation and diplomatic exchange, when the Benin President had visited India.
