It is 25 years since India lost one of the moist efficient and brilliant leaders in her history. This is the day when the Iron Lady of India, Indira Gandhi, was shot dead by Sikh extremists, as a protest to the entry of Indian Army into the Golden Temple in Amritsar in June 1984.
Thousands of people visited Shakti Sthal to pay homage to this magnificent lady who led our nation for 15 years. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who is the daughter-in-law of Indira, were the first among those who paid tribute to this bold ‘man’ of her time.
An all-religion prayer was also organised on the occasion.
Vice President Hamid Ansari as well as the grandson of the late leader, Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to her. Congress leaders Sushil Kumar Shinde, AK Antony, Ahmed Patel, Ajay Maken, R K Dhawan and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also paid homage at Shakti Sthal.
“People remember her indomitable courage, taking up the cause of the underprivileged, tremendous contribution as Prime Minister and leader of the Congress and in ensuring social justice and greater national integration,” party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan told reporters.
