The second one-day international between India and New Zealand at Wellington was called off due to torrential rain on Friday (March 6). After winning the toss, India elected to bat first. The opening pair of Sachin Tendulkar (61) and Virender Sehwag (54) gave India a solid start but their efforts went in vain, as rainy weather did not allow the match to continue. Rain interrupted the match as many as three times thereby forcing the officials to reduce the game to 34 overs.
When India's score reached 188 for four in 28.4 overs, rain came down again and the officials decided to call off the match. Virender Sehwag scored his blistering half century in 32 balls with the help of nine 4s and a six. Sehwag lost his wicket to Ian Butler after scoring 54 runs. After the dismissal of Sachin, Yuvraj Singh came in, who could not even open his account and got out to Kyle Mills. India lost their fourth wicket after Neil O'Brien dismissed Gautam Gambhir for 30 runs.
Captain MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina remained not out on 23 and 13 respectively when the match was abandoned. India was playing the second match with 1-0 lead and looked to post a big total but the rain played the spoilsport. India defeated New Zealand in Tuesday's opening match in Napier, which was also affected by rain. The third ODI of the five-match series will take place in Christchurch on Sunday (March 8).
