India defeated Canada 3-1 to register their first win in the Azlan Shah Hockey tournament. India was a goal down to Canada but then fought their way back into the match by playing some fine hockey in the second half. India got nine penalty corners whereas Canada just got one. Canada got the lead in the ninth minute of the game when Wayne Fernandez scored for Canada off their second penalty corner.

India equalized in the 45th minute with Diwakar Ram scoring off India’s fourth penalty corner. Diwakar replaced Sandeep who was injured by a powerful penalty corner shot.  Diwakar scored his second goal in the 51st minute, again through a penalty corner. Two minutes later, Shivendra Singh scored India's third goal to seal the fortunes of Canada. India could have scored more goals but the Canadian goalkeeper Mike Mahoot made some fine saves. This is India's first win from the three matches they played so far in the tournament. The win is sure to boost the players who are under tremendous pressure following to what has happened to Indian hockey in the recent days.
