The government of India has decided to ban exit polls during vote in the country. In a major announcement, the government said that there will no telecast or publication of exit polls during the time of voting. The results of the exit polls can be declared after the end of the last phase of voting. A spokesperson of the government assured that a bill will be introduced in the Parliament to completely ban exit polls.
This step will help the voters to choose their candidate without being influence by the results of exit polls conducted in different parts of the country. Also, the voters will freely use their rights in the remaining phases of election as exit poll will not be there until the last phase. The banning of exit polls will surely make many political parties happy as they find it to be unethical.
The decision of banning exit polls came at a time when a number of state elections are knocking the door including the next year's general election. Similar ban on exit was executed by the Election Commissioner of India two years ago. Many of the experts are of the opinion that the results of exit polls are bias and very often mislead the voters.
