The plummeting economy of the United States and its unfavorable effects on the rest of the world may be causing them pangs of anxiety, but ‘shining’ India seems to be bereft of such emotions and singing a different tune altogether. The report of an indepth survey released on Thursday, June 12, 2008, indicates that unlike most other nations, India firmly believes that it is benefiting from the US economy. Around 41 per cent of those surveyed in India hold the US economic influence as ‘positive’, which is the highest in the world. On the other hand, 25 per cent said it had no influence or was mixed and another 25 per cent said it was negative.
This survey was conducted by the Pew Global Attitudes Project in 24 countries and includes the views of 24,000 people. It broadly confirms the continuing positive image of the US in India, whereas elsewhere around the globe the image of US has turned towards the negative. The survey report indicates that there is also an avid interest in the ongoing US presidential campaign 2008. All those surveyed globally, including the Indians, expressed more confidence in Barack Obama than in John Mccain. McCain is rated lower than Obama in every country surveyed, except for the United States where his rating matches Obama's.
