An independent MP from Ladakh, Ghulam Hassan Khan has tied up with Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), which took its tally to 263 in the newly elected Lok Sabha. Ghulam Hassan Khan fought from Ladakh seat as an independent candidate after quitting the National Conference party of Jammu and Kashmir. However on Monday (May 18), Khan decided to return to the National Conference party and offer his support to the UPA.
 
Farooq Abdullah-led National Conference party has registered a thumping victory by winning five out of the six Lok Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir. Farooq Abdullah was elected from the prestigious Srinagar-Budgam parliamentary constituency by margin of 29,615 votes over nearest rival Moulvi Iftikhar Ansari of People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Another leader of National Conference party, Mehboob Beg won the South Kashmir seat of Anantnag defeating his nearest rival PDP’s Peer Muhammad Hussain by a margin of over 5,000 votes. 

Commenting on Ghulam Hassan Khan's decision of joining UPA, J&K chief minister, Omar Abdullah said that he and his party is extremely grateful to Khan for accepting the invitation of the Congress high command. Ghulam Hassan Khan came out victorious by defeating Congress candidate P. Namgayal.
