Experts believe that using in-car technology that warns against reckless driving may assist in reducing the number of road mishaps.

Oren Musicant, Safety engineer at Ben-Gurion University in Israel tested in-vehicle data recorders (IVDR) with teenage drivers over six months.

Staffordshire County Council, UK, had carried out an experiment of the IVDRs that observes unsafe driving incidents, like sharp turns, hard acceleration and braking and fast lane-changes, according to New Scientist.

Musicant examined that the number of unsafe driving incidents by each driver was slashed by half after the warning lights were switched on.

He suggested to the recent Intelligent Transport Systems conference in Stockholm that the system could be appended to the insurance companies’ authorisation for teenage drivers.

He said, "Some insurance companies already adjust premiums depending on how far you drive - in pay-as-you-drive programmes. This could be part of such measures, lowering premiums if a teenager uses a risk detector."

The IVDRs are manufactured by GreenRoad in San Francisco, California.
