In pursuance of the Supreme Court of India judgment, Chief Commissioner for persons with disabilities, New Delhi, Manoj Kumar has asked IITs to treat disabled on par with SCs. The decision from Chief Commissioner has come when parents of two physically challenged candidates pointed out that the IITs had treated their children on a par with OBCs.
Manoj Kumar contented that while persons with disabilities belonging to SC/ST categories get relaxation of 40% marks, the same benefit against the endorsement of the Supreme Court is not extended to physically disabled candidates belonging to the open and OBC categories. Evidently, Court has declared vertical category wise merit list for persons with disabilities from the next academic session.
Now on, the IITs must treat physically disabled candidates at par with those from the SCs and STs. Manoj Kumar concluding his opinion on the issue said that existing system is discriminatory and denies physically handicapped equal opportunity to compete on equal footing with the candidates belonging to other vertical categories.
