HRD Ministry has agreed upon the demand of IITs of de-reserving vacant faculty which does not get filled for a year. Also, the ministry admitted that it erred while asking IITs to reserve posts from the entry level of lecturer, as lecturer's job is now contractual, and how can those on contract be given reservation. Now, the government will amend its earlier law to fit the situation.

The ministry in its decision will not ask IITs to reserve seats in lectureship.  Also, there would be implementation of caste quotas across all streams. As of now, the decision has not been taken and it will be taken soon in a meeting between ministry officials and IIT directors. The provision for across the stream reservation at entry level will still be there.

Earlier, in the month of June, HRD Ministry had asked for the implementation for the 49.5% quota in faculty in IITs, and, for a across all posts (lecturers, assistant professors, professors) in management and humanities. It had asked for entry level reservation in the post of science and engineering branch lecturers, which has been opposed on IITs behalf.
