Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai has begun processing the nine percent OBC quota for post-graduate and doctoral courses from the current academic year. IIT Mumbai will be implementing the 27 percent OBC quota in three phases following the Supreme Court Order in April. IIT Mumbai Director, Ashok Misra revealed that in addition to the nine percent OBC quota, there would be 4.1 percent intake in 2008. This will result in the overall intake in every course becoming 13.10 percent.
The Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai will be implementing the OBC quota in three phases due to lack of infrastructure and faculty strength. The overall intake of students in the next three years hence will turn to 54 percent. The current academic year will also witness a rise in the number of students belonging to SC and ST category owing to an overall increase in intake of students. Mr. Ashok Misra maintained that the overall increase is being done in order to maintain the number of students in general category.
