Establishment of an IIT in Gujarat is part of decision by the Central Human Resource Development Ministry which earlier this year had announced of setting up of new IITs including one in Gujarat. Initially the IIT will be located in the Vishwakarma Government Engineering College campus at Chandkheda in Gandhinagar district where the necessary infrastructural support is already in place. Later on it would be shifted to Gandhinagar, says the source.
Jaynarayan Vyas, the Health Minister of Gujarat, in official release, has said that the state government has decided to make IIT functional from this academic year only. IIT Gujarat will provide 5-year B-tech degree with 40 seats each in three branches of engineering including – Chemical, Electrical and Mechanical. The state government has already allotted land for the IIT-Gujarat in the Gandhinagar
