The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) operating in Costa Rica is expected to come up with Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services. As per a statement of the spokesperson of ICE, with the help of new IPTV service both national and international programmes will be telecasted. The subscribers of IPTV service will be offered with Video on Demand and lots of other Internet services including Web access and VoIP.

According to ICE's president, Pedro Pablo Quirós, internet television will get operational by the end of this year. ICE has awarded the contact of Internet television to ITS Servicios de Infocomunicación S.A for $19 million dollars. Other companies like ZTE Corporation and Consorcio DESCA-ATL protested against ICE's awarding of contract to ITS but Contraloría General de la República or the Comptroller's office has rejected their appeal.

The new decision of Comptroller's office in favour of ICE has moved forward the plan of IPTV service. Internet Protocol Television is a system where a digital television service is being delivered using Internet Protocol over a broadband connection. Many of the world's major telecommunications providers find IPTV as new means of generating revenue. Almost all the major western countries and most developed economies have IPTV deployments.
