Hyundai Motor India (HMI) has announced that the company will come out with diesel versions of its i20 and i10 cars in India. The petrol versions of the two cars were launched in Indian market last year. According to an HMI official, the diesel variants will help the company to get larger chunk in small car market. HMI has a share of about 25 percent of small car segment in India. The company exports the diesel versions of i20 and i10 cars which are being developed in its Chennai plant. HMI markets only the petrol variants in India.

While interacting with the media a senior official of the company informed that HMI will roll out the diesel versions in India by the end of this year. He informed that the company has not finalised anything on the size of engine. It is expected that the diesel version of i20 cars will be launched first after which the i10 diesel will be marketed.

Source said that the price of the diesel version of Hyundai i20 will be between Rs 5-6 lakh, 20-25 percent higher than the petrol version. The 1.4 litre CRDi engine is expected to offer a fuel efficiency of around 20 km per litre. The Hyundai i20 diesel is likely to come out in twin variants. The diesel versions of Hyundai car will give though competition to diesel cars of other leading brands including Maruti, Skoda, Tata Motors, Ford and Fiat.
