After wooing the customers with its petrol version, i20 is all set to impress them with its diesel engine as well. Hyundai Motors, one of the largest car manufacturers and biggest car exporters in India, has announced its plans of launching the diesel model of its premier hatchback, i20, in the country, in the current year itself. However, the engine size of the version is yet to be finalized.
The announcement of the new i20 version was made by Mr. Arvind Saxena, Senior Vice President of Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), on the occasion of the company’s tie-up with Punjab National Bank. The international markets have already been introduced to the diesel variant of the Hyundai i20, with 1.6 liter and 1.4 liter engines. Finally, it is the turn of India to get the model, by the end of 2009.
It is expected that Hyundai will keep the diesel version of the i20, in India, within the compact car segment only. This is because, in the country, a lower excise duty is levied on car companies in case of compact cars, as compared to the duty on bigger cars. Keeping this in mind, it can be estimated that the engine capacity of i20 diesel version in India will be lower than that of its European counterpart, possibly around 1.4 or 1.5 liters.
