Moving towards developing a green car, scientists from University of Sunderland have developed a Hydrogen-powered car. Named 'HyPower Nissan Almera' has been unveiled at the Partners4Automotive 2008 conference in the University campus. The team of scientists was led by Dirk Kok from the Institute of Automotive and Manufacturing Advanced Practice (AMAP).

Kok in his statement said that the HyPower project shows that hydrogen is a practical and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels. He however, was cautious about the development, and said that though this is a significant step forward, a lot has to be done towards making it transport vehicle. For Adrian Morris, Operations Manager at AMAP, the project is a major breakthrough in the development environment friendly transport vehicle.

Morris is of the opinion that the project is important towards understanding of hydrogen as a fuel for the automotive industry, and the latest vehicle will act as a test bed to evaluate novel hydrogen technologies in vehicles and will enhance the region's status as an important automotive research and development centre. However, Kok has cleared that the project will take time to come up with a mass production Hydrogen powered car.
