A Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson on Friday, May 23, 2008 has revealed that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has expressed his desire to strengthen and diversify bilateral relations with India. The thoughts of the Venezuelan President were conveyed in a meeting between the President and Minister of State for external affairs, Anand Sharma during the latter’s three day visit to Venezuela from May 18 to 20.
The next India-Venezuela joint commission meeting is expected to be held in New Delhi later this year. The Venezuelan side also thanked India for setting up an IT centre of excellence in Venezuela. The official statement also mentioned that Hugo Chavez has confirmed his country’s desire to develop a durable and multi-faceted partnership especially in the areas of science & technology, energy, agriculture and pharmaceuticals including generics.
A range of bilateral relations were also reviewed in a luncheon meeting where Venezuelan ministers of Culture, S&T, Education and Higher Education and vice-ministers of Light Industries and Commerce & Tourism also participated.
