The FIH men's hockey World Cup, which is to be played from February 28 to March 13, 2010, will have 12 participating teams. Nine of the teams have already booked their place for the tournament.
 
The nine teams that have qualified for the championship include host India, Canada, Korea, South Africa, Australia, England, Germany, Netherlands and Spain.
 
The three remaining slots left have 18 contestants. The three world cup qualifiers will be held in Lille, France from October 31 to November 8, Invercargill in New Zealand from November 7-15 and Quilmes in Argentina from November 14-22. This was said in the FIH statement. This will give chance to three teams out of 18 to make a place in the event.
 
The teams participating in the Lille qualifier include Japan, France, Poland, Russia and Italy. New Zealand, China, Malaysia, Austria, Scotland and Wales will be contesting in Invercargill qualifier. Quilmes qualifier includes the teams of Belgium, Argentina, Ireland, USA, Czech Republic and Chile.
