After making its debut in North America, Japan, Australia, Canada and West Europe, Mitsubishi Outlander is all set to enter the Indian market. This sports utility vehicle (SUV) from Mitsubishi has been launched in India by Hindustan Motors (HM) on October 3, 2008. According to the chairman of HM, C.K. Birla, the company has decided to introduce the new vehicle in order to maintain its policy of presenting latest cars to Indian consumers.
 
Endowed with 2.4-litre petrol engine, the Mitsubishi Outlander costs Rs 20.2 lakh. The company is hopeful of selling about 100 units within a month. Initially the car was launched in 2001 under the name of Mitsubishi Airtrek and in 2003; it was renamed as Mitsubishi Outlander. The new car in India from Mitsubishi incorporates all the major features of a SUV and will easily compete with Honda CR-V.    
 
The Hindustan Motors has entered in a marketing and manufacturing agreement with Japanese auto firm Mitsubishi. There are three HM manufacturing plants in India at Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu with a total capacity of 44,000 units. The company has also planned to come out with a variant of Lancer in Indian market.
