On Monday 26th (January), US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton named Todd Stern as the USA’s new climate change envoy. Todd Stern will become the country’s chief climate negotiator with the international community. Stern will also be involved in domestic side in the US efforts to reduce carbon emission.
 
The announcement was a part of USA’s new policy of being present on the international stage to address global warming issues. Now USA is taking a lead role for finding a solution to climate change issue along with international community, which is hoping to agree to a new climate treaty by the end of this year.
 
After the appointment Ms. Clinton said that, Stern would pursue negotiations with the world’s other major polluters to reach a deal to cut emissions of greenhouse gases. She also said that there is enough evidence to show that world is facing a climate crisis. She also stressed the need for cooperation among all major carbon emitting nations to tackle this issue.
 
Stern served as a senior advisor to former president Bill Clinton and led the US delegation to the Kyoto talks in 1997. This Kyoto talks resulted Kyoto Protocol, the first ever global climate treaty, which the US never joined. World leaders have set a deadline of December to work out a successor to the Kyoto Protocol.
