The dead body of 25-year-old journalist Soumya Vishwanathan from Headlines Today was found in her car near Vasant Kunj in New Delhi on September 30, 2008. According to the police, Soumya Vishwanathan was shot in head while she was heading home from work. This incident reportedly took place between 3.10 am to 3.55 am on Nelson Mandela Marg near Vasant Kunj.

The police says the motive behind the murder is not clear yet. It might be a case of robbery, personal enmity or road rage. A murder case has been registered and investigation is on, said the DCP of Southwest Delhi, Shalini Singh. It was a local rickshaw puller who informed the police about the murder on Nelson Mandela Marg.

Soumya Vishwanathan was supposed to meet her sister and brother-in-law who have recently come from Vietnam. She had also taken leave from the office. On that fatal night after leaving the Headlines Today office at around 3.02 am, Vishwanathan had also called her father. She told her father that she would be home within 15 to 20 minutes, said the police.

Her colleague at Headlines Today, Abhishek Bhalla said that she was one of the best persons in the channel production unit. Vishwanathan was a student of Indian Institute of Mass Communication in Dhenkanal.
