CJI K G Balakrishnan has asked the CJs of all 21 High Courts to disclose their assets in pursuance of SC’s own 11-year-old judicial resolution. However, the latest move from CJI has not come only of his eagerness towards transparency, there has been many voices coming from different sectors through RTI asking judges to disclose their assets.

The said judicial resolution of SC contains that every judge should make a declaration of all his/her assets in the form of real estate or investments, held by him/her or spouses or dependants, within a reasonable time of assuming office. Accordingly, the same will be applicable to sitting judges.

The resolution declares that the CJs of HCs should disclose their assests for the HC records; however, under the resolution the disclosure of assets by judges would not be under public scrutiny. The resolution firmly states that the declarations made by the judges or the CJ shall be confidential. Also, the judges will have to disclose out every subsequent additional property or investment.
