Low-income students can now dream to get admissions in the elite colleges of Harvard and Yale University, despite their financial status. Harvard University is now dispatching recruiters to not so well off US locales, courting low income applicants. This is a move aimed at diversifying the 6,715 undergraduates who are mostly from wealthy families. Harvard in December even revised its aid plans to turn more affordable to the middle class.
Harvard, Yale and other Ivy League schools feel that they have failed to attract disadvantaged students as they require. Harvard’s recruiting campaign amongst poor families is still lesser known to prevent it from becoming an exclusive preserve of the rich. According to official sources just 12 percent of Harvard undergraduates receive ‘Pell Grants’, a form of aid for households with income below $40,000.
According to Census Bureau more than 40 percent of US families belong to this category. None the less the number of Pell recipients have still increased at Harvard compared to other universities like the University of Pennsylvania, where Pell recipients fell by 33 percent.
