A new tea processing factory was opened in Chundale, Wayanad, Kerala by Tea producer Harrisons Malayalam Ltd. Harrisons already has a tea factory in the same location.
The new plant worth Rs.6 crore will enable the production capacity to reach 3.7 million kg. Harrisons currently produces 3.5 million kg of tea.
The new plant is capable of processing CTC (crush, tear and curl) tea and is fully automated.
"HML hopes these efficiency improvements will also help partially to offset the cost escalation due to the wage increase in the last wage settlement," said Pankaj Kapoor, managing director of the company.
HML, a subsidiary of RPG Enterprises, has diversified businesses like tyre, power transmission, telecommunication, retail, consumer marketing and entertainment.
The company officials have revealed that heavy investments have been made by HML for infilling, replanting and modernising factories, despite the fact that the entire industry is battling economic crises.
These investments provide an opportunity for the company to revamp itself. N. Dharmaraj, vice-president of HML tea division, has revealed that this will offer jobs for many people also.
