A UN official named John Solecki has been kidnapped from Pakistan's southwestern city of Quetta on Monday (February 2). According to local police, the UN official is an American national and was heading the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees office in Quetta. Report says that on Monday morning the unidentified gunmen killed the driver and abducted the senior UN official.
According to a Pakistani security official, the incident of kidnapping is very unusual in Quetta. He claimed that Taliban militants might have abducted Solecki. It may also turn out to be case of kidnapping for ransom, he added. According to Amena Kamal, the spokesperson for the United Nations in Islamabad, John Solecki was heading to his office on Monday morning when the gunmen attacked his vehicle and took him hostage.
John Solecki had been working in Pakistan for the last two years. The U.N. agency is in constant touch with the Pakistani government to rescue out Mr. Solecki from the clutches of the kidnappers. Until now, no group has claimed the responsibility of the kidnapping case.
