India Watch
Inflation has become a major issue in front of government and looking into that and particularly towards essential ingredients like pulses, government is thinking of subsidizing the same. Under new scheme government is examining the viability of subsidizing four lakh tones of pulses at Rs.10 per kg. Incidentally, India produces around 14 to 14.5 million tones.

India imports around 3 million tones of pulses from overseas, and substantial part is imported from Canada, Australia and some African countries. This time it is looking to import the same from Myanmar amounting one million tonne. After, importation these will be canalized accordingly with state owned bodies and agencies.

Evidently, the retail prices of main pulses like arhar, moong and urad are haywire and customers have to pay anywhere Rs 40-50 per kg in many places of the country. Prices of wheat are also touching high in the circumstances when India’s annual inflation has risen persistently since the last few months on the background of soaring prices of crude oil.
