Government, which has an ambition for having 1,034.80 lakh skilled people by 2022, has plans for setting up 1,500 Industrial Training Institutes and 10,000 skill development centres under its National Skill Development Mission by involving private sector.

According to the proposal, about 293.41 lakh people will receive training for craftsmanship, 54 lakh will be trained as apprentices and 110.5 lakh will receive training under skill development initiatives. The skill development centres, set up via PPP model, will render training to 572 lakh people under the next five year plan.

The 969 employment exchanges will be given a complete revamping so that it can extend quality guidance on capability assessment, career counselling, vocational guidance and training related information to youth, instead of just notifying them with vacancies.

“Introduction of short-term modular courses and issuing scholarship reimbursable vouchers to institutions that focus on skill development are also on the government’s agenda to meet the ambitious target,” an official pointed out. The government hopes that 70 million jobs will be created during the 11th Plan (2007-12).
