The Sixth Central Pay Commission recommendations finally found an approval from the Union Cabinet on Thursday, presenting an average pay hike of 21% for Central Government employees.
With some minor modifications, the Cabinet broadly accepted the recommendations of the Sixth Central Pay Commission. “ The cabinet has approved the pay commission's report.”. Cabinet minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters in New Delhi after a cabinet meeting.
The new system of four Pay Bands with 20 Grade Pays recommended by the commission was accepted with some minor changes. The revised pay scale is expected to come into force from January 2006 while the revised rates of allowances will be effective from September this year.
A high powered committee consisted of foreign, home, defence and finance ministers led by Prime Minister agreed the commission’s report with certain changes. They reportedly discussed the report in the light of disapprovals by the armed and police forces. In case of Army, the pay of soldiers would be increased by Rs 2000 but the structure of officers would remain unchanged.
Other sections of government like IPS and Indian Forest Service Officials will be benefited from the Pay commission recommendations. Also the minimum basic pay of a government employee has been increased from Rs 6000 to Rs 7000.
The higher salaries for 5 million government employees will cost the Centre Rs 178 billion annually.
