Bharatiya Janata Party, while accusing that government lacked “sensitivity and compassion" towards the victims of the Mumbai terror attacks, has asked for solemn assurance towards providing compensation to the victims.
BJP has also accused Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee for behaving in an impolite fashion to BJP leader Ananth Kumar when he asked about the assurance on compensation for Mumbai attack victims yesterday.
"His (Mukherjee's) remarks were not in good taste," BJP leader Sushma Swaraj told, while addressing the media persons in New Delhi. She said that the Finance Minister should have answered the queries of Ananth Kumar in a way which adhered to the parliamentary etiquette, as Kumar had maintained the etiquette.
According to Kumar, only 118 of the 403 victims have received compensation, which include the injured as well as the relatives of those who succumbed to the terrorists. "The home ministry has cleared only 98 proposals for giving rehabilitation package, the Railway Claims Tribunal had cleared only 42 cases of 150 eligible, while 32 persons had been offered job by the railways of 64 eligible for employment”, said Kumar, while mentioning that 24 persons, who were critically injured during the incident, still have bullets in their body.
"They (the government) were incompetent in preventing the attack and lack sensitivity and compassion to provide relief to the victims," Kumar told the 0media persons.
He said that the Finance Minister was responsible for answering the questions on the extraordinary issue. "The government should not behave in a callous manner," he said, adding that the BJP was only apprising the government of the status of victims' compensation claims in the house.
Kumar also said that 26/11 was a national tragedy on which the country needs to stand united and his party will not be lagging in this effort.
