Google’s Street View service is offering the famous pilgrim routes in Spain online. The service re-creates the famous sites like Alhambra in Granada, Road to Santiago in Spain, the Toledo Cathedral, the aqueduct in Segovia, Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the mosque in Cordoba on the internet.
Road to Santiago in Spain is the home to the Shrine of St. James. Lots of pilgrims visit the Galician city to pay homage to the saint. St. James the Apostle was beheaded in Jerusalem by King Herod and his disciples brought his remains to Galicia. Since then it is being worshipped there for 2000 years.
Google Street View service will offer many pilgrim sites in Spain as part of its virtual pilgrimage option. The users can now search for roads, highways, restaurants and other important places in this feature. There is clear demarcation of the start point from Auritz to the end point in Galicia.
This was announced recently by the regional president Alberto Nunez Feijoo in the presence of Google Spain executives.
The tourists and pilgrims can now travel to famous places in Pamplona, Santo Domingo de la Calzada, Estella, Logrono and Santiago de Compostela. The virtual map will be immensely helpful to find hotels and restaurants. Apart from that they can plan their future trips according to the climate and availability of the hotels.
Nunez Feijoo said, “Google's showcasing of Galicia and the Camino de Santiago will make the route a trans-national phenomenon."
UNESCO has declared ‘The Road to Santiago’ as a World Heritage Site.
