This year’s MediaGuardian 100 power list is out and the top position has gone to Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the founders of Google, in recognition "of the all-pervasive impact of Google on the media". The list measures economic, cultural and political influence of people. By topping this list, Brin and Page have become the most powerful figures in the British media.
Last year, Eric Schmidt, Google chief executive, had displaced Brin and Page from the top position, becoming the Number 1. However, the duo claimed back their position this year, in recognition of "their higher-profile role at the Silicon Valley search giant". Amongst the other people making up the top 10 of the list were Apple's Steve Jobs and Microsoft's Steve Ballmer.
While London-based Daily Mail's Paul Dacre is the best-placed newspaper editor, BBC Fiction chief Jane Tranter became a new entrant, at Number 10. An interesting twist to the list was in case of media tycoon James Murdoch, who was listed ahead of his father, Rupert, for the first time. While Rupert was at fifth position, James managed to jump ahead to Number 2.
