Leading search engine, Google on Friday (June 19) announced to take steps to restrict pornography reaching Internet users in China. According to statement from Google, the company is constantly putting its efforts to deal with the pornographic content on Chinese websites. The recent decision from the search engine has come up after a mainland watchdog found that it has provided a large number of links to obscene and vulgar sites.
China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center, the Internet watchdog, stated that the search engine has not been able to filter pornographic contents despite of several prior warnings. The watchdog said that Google has failed to meet the Chinese laws and regulations as far as Internet usage is concerned.
According to the reports of the Chinese Internet watchdog, Google has been providing links to a large number of lewd and vulgar pictures, videos and articles to Internet users. China has the world's largest population of Internet users at more than 298 million. The administration of the communist country has a tight control over Internet.
The Chinese government banned online pornography and launched a nationwide crackdown that led to the closing of more than 1,900 Web sites, this year. With only 30 percent of search market, Google has struggled to expand its operation in China. China's homegrown Baidu search engine is placed at the top with about 60 percent of the market share.
