The California-based Google is all set to digitize newspaper archives, starting with its own news initially and followed by that of other newspapers’, announced the company on September 08, 2008. Google finds this new program to be immensely beneficial for the newspapers as the works of journalists of all the generation would be available online. On the other hand, many news publishers find this new technique to be a treat to their business.
The new program of digitization of newspaper archives is obviously an expansion of two-year-old service agreement between Google and leading newspapers like The New York Times, The Washington Post and some others that were available in digitized version. The new program would help the browsers to go through the archives of old news that were published in the printed version.
The entire cost of digitizing newspaper archives would be met by Google. At the initial period the archives would be available through Google news but later on it will allow the newspaper organizations to upload them on their respective web sites. Of course, Google would take prior permission of the newspaper publishers before going for scanning. Although many feel it to be a beneficial move, some oppose it claiming newspaper archives to be potential source of earning revenue.
