Google is known to roll out innovative things. And now, it has launched an interesting feature, Image Swirl to make image search easier. However, it has categorically said that the new feature is in progress and it may not be available now in Google search.
This image search function has been launched keeping an eye at the latest Visual Search function launched by the Bing. Earlier, Microsoft had launched the Visual Search service in September.
Google Image Swirl is an image search interface that contains a grid of 12 thumbnails stacked with images. This grid represents most relevant group of images, which are sorted together. When a user clicks on any stack, then page shows up a big circular cluster connected to a small cluster circle. The remaining 11 thumbnails are connected with the recent clicked page. It shows as if thumbnails are swirling like cluster circles.
The new Image Swirl is an implementation of two of the earlier features, Picasa Face Recognition and Similar Images. At present, the image search function can query about 2,00,000 image queries and its database will be enhanced later on.
However, it’s not easy to search the images which come without metadata. So it’s obvious that the image search engine will rely more on the graphical recognition rather than the meta description mentioned with the image.
