It is speculated that internet giant Google is going to release its Chrome OS Code as an open-source code. This news came when the search giant arranged a press conference at its Mountain View headquarters.
Earlier, the company had disclosed its ambition of a new Linux-based OS and it had hinted at releasing the open-source code soon.
Google has said that its new OS, Google Chrome will be designed for the netbooks segment and the first sets may hit the market in the second half next year.
This development may pose more competition as Microsoft had a major chunk of netbook market. Earlier Linux had dominated that sector.
Google is trying to enter the other segments for new revenue streams as it is mostly dependent on the search advertising business.
Google has clarified that there is the need of a new OS for the web as most of the Google's non-search activities, Gmail, Maps and Google Docs are Web-based applications.
