On Sunday, Adam Gilchrist once again proved why he was considered one of the most devastating batsmen in world cricket. Gilchrist slammed the fastest century of the IPL to give Deccan Chargers their first victory in the IPL. Gilly scored his century in just 42 balls and broke the record of his teammate and compatriot Andrew Symonds who scored his century in 47 balls against the Rajasthan Royals. It is also the fastest century in twenty20 Cricket. The former Australian wicket keeper played a swashbuckling knock of 109 runs in just 48 balls which included 9 fours and 10 sixes. His strike rate was well over 200.
Gilly's knock also helped the Deccan Chargers to become the first team in the IPL to register a win by 10 wickets. Defending a reasonable score of 154 runs, the Mumbai Indians had no answer to Gilchrist who butchered the Mumbai attack all round the park. He also took his tally of sixes to 13 which is only next to Brendon McCullum who has hit 15 sixes in the tournament. He was well supported by VVS Laxman at the other end. Gilly's hurricane innings ensured that Mumbai Indians didn't open their account in the points table and subsequently lost their fourth match in a row.
