The US President George W Bush went on his final Europe tour on Tuesday, June 10, hoping to garner support of allies for pressurizing Iran over its nuclear program despite still being at odds over the issue of climate change. The outgoing US President held pre-summit deliberations with Slovenian leaders, who are presently holding the rotating EU presidency. Since the US led war in Iraq has already invited enough flak, the governments of both US and European countries played down the chance of making any dramatic declarations during Bush’s visit.
The difference in opinions over the Iraq issue has lessened to some extent as Europeans now look past George Bush to his successor who will take on the reigns of the US government from November. However, a closing statement from the EU summit indicates that US and EU are geared up to threaten extra measures against Iran atop EU sanctions incase it went on contradicting demands to suspend sensitive nuclear work. It was unanimously agreed that Iran should not be permitted to get nuclear power even though Tehran insists that its nuclear programme is strictly for civilian use.
