According to a new study, genetic variation can help certain people to sleep for just a few hours and regain their energy.
The mutation of gene DEC2, that controls the sleep cycles, causes some people to sleep for just six hours. This has been revealed by the scientists from the University of California in a study.
The study had been conducted on a mother and her daughter whose gene DEC2 showed the variation.
The gene was introduced in mice and cross-checked if the animals required fewer hours of sleep for rejuvenating.
According to Ying-Hui Fu, a professor of neurology and one of the researchers, the DEC2 gene may be involved only in determining the duration of sleeping or remaining awake.
The professor also added that there can be other factors which may be involved in determining the level of sleep in a person
The results of the study were published in the latest issue of the Science magazine.
