Advanced reactors and nuclear services provider GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) has inked an agreement with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for developing nuclear power plants in India. Under the deal both GEH and L&T will develop the proposed Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) for nuclear power station. GEH will provide the technological support for the project. It will also offer engineering and technical advisory services for the nuclear power plant projects.
According to GE Energy (India, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh) CEO Kishore Jayaraman, the tie up with engineering and construction company L&T will help India to meet its power needs through nuclear energy. A few months ago, GEH has tied up with Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) for ABWR development. At present, the company is sorting out plans with NPCIL for setting up the multi-unit ABWR plant.
GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy is a joint venture between U.S conglomerate General Electric Co and Japan's Hitachi while L&T is one of the leading engineering and construction companies of India. GEH's ABWR technology is the world's only commercially proven Generation III advanced reactor design. ABWR technology from GEH will help to set up nuclear power plants in India.
