Asserting their rights gays, lesbians, and transsexuals recently held a parade in commercial capital of India, Mumbai. Manvendra Singh Gohil, the prince of Rajpipla, talking on behalf of the groups said that they are asking British to apologize for the legacy of hatred British has left in the form of Section 377. Evidently, Section 377 of IPC prohibits any unnatural intercourse.
The rally was held at August Kranti Maidan to Girgaum Chowpatty. There was colorful procession with rainbow flags, hats, feathers, masks. Totaling around 500 persons, they were accompanied with their families, friends and supporters. Advocate Anand Grover informed about anti-gay laws and its repercussions. He said that it is difficult to work in a community where they are treated as criminal.
Interestingly, British made Indian Penal Code which was more or less based on Christian beliefs where any unnatural sex is considered sin has become the issue of contention from alternative sex groups. Release from protesters said that India has a tradition of tolerance towards homosexuals, and the Union government must abandon this abhorrent alien legacy of the Britishers.
