A review of 11 studies shows that taking garlic as food supplement on regular basis reduces blood pressure. Blood pressure is a ubiquitous health problem and herbal treatment could be useful. The study analyzed the patients when they were given daily intake of garlic and its effect came out positive. The conclusion of the experiment was that it led to fall blood pressure.
The leader of the study Dr Karin Ried, of Adelaide University in South Australia, confirming the conclusion of the study said that in some cases the supplement even achieved the same result as drugs such as beta blockers. In form of supplement active ingredient, allicin (found in a small clove of garlic) was given to targeted patients, and conclusions are based on it only.
The study is published in a medical journal ‘BMC Cardiovascular Disorder.’ However, medical fraternity is taking the study cautiously as the research team itself has suggested a need for further study. The research team concluded that a thorough research is needed to assess the impact of garlic supplements on the risk of heart disease.
