The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) of India has decided to declare Ganga as the national river of the country. In statement issued to the media, the PMO stated that Ganga will get a separate river basin authority which will take care of the cleanliness of the river water flowing through various states. Prime Minster of India will chair the proposed river basin authority while the chief ministers of states owning Ganga will be its members. The authority is supposed to plan out ways to revive the pollution-engulfed river of India.

Referring to Ganga as a divine river, the PM stressed on the need of new institutional mechanism for planning out a model for river cleaning. The proposed authority will engage various agencies working on different aspects of river conservation and pollution management for monitoring cleanliness of Ganga river. According to reports, Ganga river is the most polluted in terms of biochemical oxygen demand load. The government of India has spent huge amount of money to stop pollution in Ganga river but failed drastically. The new plan under the leadership of Manmohan Singh might become successful to reinstate the sanctity of this holy river of India.
